Disney world and particularly animated movies by Disney that revolve around royalty and princesses have been influencing children around the world for decades. The power of the Disney movie can be observed when any person sees the money these movies make at the box office. The billions of dollars that have been earned through decades are because globally young children both boys and girls watch these movies over and over again. The messages in the film are not always welcoming or perhaps ethically proper to be exposed to the children. In this context, the main act performed by the heroines and the heroes of the movies are most of the times debatable for decency concerning educating or affecting children’s behavior in real life.Disney movies are made on compelling topics like evil and good, fighting injustice, fighting for one’s rights and living a perfect life. In this perspective, the lead roles of the characters both male and female are designed to portray their role in their lives that is animated and imaginary. The fact that these movies are fictitious, the characters have to be developed which gives ease to the viewers in relating themselves to those imaginative characters. Since the lead characters have to be the winners, they might be allowed to do some things that might not be appropriate in real life. This is where the paradox occurs. The male characters are often shown as the powerful characters that do extraordinary acts to protect the female counterpart. If we take examples from the well-known animated movies like ‘The Little Mermaid, The Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin’ the list may go on forever as there are thousands of animated movies at this time. The main heroines are always waiting for the male characters to save them from different problems. The problems may be relative in the real world, and this is where the young audience is influenced. As children are more prone to idealize things, they are more prone to be affected by the messages of these movies. There are children now around the world that want to be part of the royal princesses group and take pride in wearing similar clothes and having merchandise of these imaginary characters like dolls, action figures and many more. The article ‘Bonfire of the Disney Princesses’ by Barbara Ehrenreich in the Nation website relates to the paradox at hand. The male characters are seemed to be taking the lead in all contexts and princesses are most of the times left to the mercy of the prince. This is where it gets troublesome, and parents now realizing the effects of the Disney movies are now trying to counter these subliminal messages and debate on the issues that how can a person who is not fit to educate a child may be allowed to write scripts for movies that promote gender inequality in the most vulnerable age.The fact that the role of male characters in the movies are often more powerful than the female characters the girls naturally try to adapt to the female characters in real life. Similarly, male audience is influenced as well, and this is where the message of gender inequality is given to the children when they are less equipped to judge the situations in a more formal or adult manner. Children lack the intellect to differentiate the real life and the movies’ story and feels that what happened in the movie should be happening in real life as well. This is because, at the end of the movies, the message of happily ever after teaches the child that doing such actions will allow them to live happily ever after as well.Work Cited“Bonfire Of The Disney Princesses”.
